What: A man's workshop / Ranch

Where: The back hills of the LA National Forest

While visiting, I asked to take some snap shots of his shop. It's quite large including a shipping container full of more tools and cool stuff. The property is 15 acres, surrounded by trees and a small river running thru. As I explored,asking questions and in awe of so many cool trinkets I realized why I was so captivated. One being, Jack is a true old school craftsman. He could build, trap, cut, make, dig anything you want. Two, all the history that was accumulated in one spot!

He has an array of old brass bells hanging from one end to the other, a collection of pitch forks displayed, his wall of wonders(pictured below) are mainly for decoration but definitely defines the aesthetics of his shop.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. With their Mo’s, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com to join the CROW THIEF team with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

San Diego guys are stylish, but never pretentious; inspired but not easily influenced. These gentlemen refuse to follow trend, and instead, trust their instinct. They crave late night drinks at Starlite Lounge, seek DJ talent at El Dorado, and make reservations at Alchemy for date night. They only order handcrafted cocktails and local craft beer. So why would they accept any less custom craftsmanship for the shirt on their back?

Crow Thief is a handcrafted men’s wear label that just opened a new retail boutique in South Park. Owner and designer Melissa Hendrix-Lawson has been styling in-the-know gents in custom made-to-order shirts since 2008, and will now expand her reach with the launch of a flagship store. Having worked with Forever21 and the Hotel del Coronado, Melissa has a background in both apparel manufacturing and buying, and has been waiting for the right time to funnel her experience into a new passion project.

From indigo denim to distressed brown lamb skin, Melissa sources quality fabrics from around the world and assembles the men’s wear garments locally in California. The brand is not committed to seasonal assumptions or trend demands; but rather, it’s dedicated to substance, soul and experience. Unique to Crow Thief, each style is only produced in limited quantities, which allows local guys to treasure their exclusivity.

The Crow Thief space resembles a restored farm house, with recycled wood walls, white vintage chairs, and antique décor interspersed with handcrafted shirts and leather goods for sale. A few of Melissa’s signature shirts include the California Thrasher, an indigo denim shirt with black lamb skin leather front placket, cuffs and bottom hem; Fox Sparrow, a light weight brown and turquoise plaid shirt with pyramid studs, brown distressed lamb skin leather accents, side panels, button placket, bottom hem and cuff; and Rock Dove, a light weight blue / grey denim shirt with black lamb skin leather accents, button placket, bottom hem and cuff.

But if you prefer to create your own one-of-a-kind style, you can subscribe to Crow Thief’s Custom Craftsmanship division.

Melissa explains, “I aspire to offer all of our clients a unique experience when walking into my store, capturing and cultivating a new era of tradition, craftsmanship and sophistication. Here, our clients have the opportunity to be involved with the process or purchase ready to wear.”

Sunday Morning in San Diego was cool for many reasons. One reason that stands out above the rest was the ONE DAY ONLY indie fashion tradeshow "Thread". We got fresh; got in the car and rolled down to make our presence known. As we walked in the our interest level went for 10 to 2 in record time. Brands have got to step it up quite a bit. The t-shirt company biz "thing" is almost as over done as "I'm a Rapper" thing in the hip-hop industry. Every jo-blow that can come up with a crazy name wants to start a brand. Which eventually makes everything turn to crap. Thank god there are still some people out there with real skills and of course we took some pics.

Crow Thief is a amazing brand all done by the work one Ms. Melissa Hendrix. Her brand caught our attention simply because we love all things fresh . Simply because you can throw on one of her limited edition tailored button ups with a pair of crispy High Top Louboutin sneakers she gets "the brand of the show" award. Officially Rich&Rude.

Nothing like being surrounded by a lil leather ...

Leather suppliers like this are far and few! Looking for the right color, texture and specialty treatment takes quite some time. We've always sourced the best quality leathers stemming from Italy, yet luckily located just a few miles down the street.

While catching up for lost time since my last visit, I wander around touching, unrolling, digging and searching for what sets us apart.

The best thing about my visit is that it's just me and my creative thoughts. I have always tended to spend hours in fabric stores ever since I was young and still to this day I spend hours, they just seem to pass faster!

Crow Thief's demand to be unique, eye catching , luxurious and always achieve substance is extremely important to us. I hope through our eyes you are able to experience the adventures that truly set our handcrafted way's apart from others.

L.A. Fashion Market Wrap Up

Off I went on Saturday to the Fashion District in LA to cover the L.A. Fashion Market for the Fall/Winter 2009 collections – and I loved every minute of it. There was a lot to see, so expect a lot of posts related to it in the near future.

I saw a ton of edgy lines, and all the showroom reps were more than willing to give me info whenever I asked (which was nice, I thought they’d retreat a bit when they realized I wasn’t a buyer). I’ve wanted to be a buyer since I was a young girl, but actually being at this show and seeing the buyers in action definitely made me realize that I would absolutely kill for that job….like, seriously, hand me a machete I’ll take someone out if it means becoming a buyer.

It’s perfect for me. I’m the girl that, when I was 3 years old, would go to the store with her family and have to be reminded, “now, we’re just looking remember?” I was also convinced that I was born at Wal-Mart until I was about 4 years old….that’s how much consumerism and shopping has influenced my life.

Fall trends that were prevalent at every showroom were leather, tons of embellishments, studs, SEQUINS, tulle, metallic fabrics, ruffles and tiered pieces. Leggings are also a big ticket item for Fall. Overall, pieces emphasizing attention to detail were the mainstays – so expect to see a lot of that in the seasons to come.

I was actually pleasantly surprised, I wasn’t expecting much of a wow-factor, considering the economy. But it was pretty apparent that some of the designers are confronting the economy head-on by refusing to cower or stifle their creativity.

WILLIAM RAST BRINGS THE HEATThe label that brought it, in my opinion, for Fall/Winter 2009 was definitely William Rast. I was actually the most excited to see what this showroom had to offer – I’ve been a big Justin Timberlake fan since I was 12 and I wanted to see if he really knew what he was doing when it came to fashion.

Having a denim line is one thing, but making other substantial pieces is another. I know William Rast is a pretty big line and is carried just about everywhere, but that doesn’t mean they’ve lost their originality. I was more than impressed when I walked into their showroom on the 5th floor of the California Market Center.

Now is the time to invest in non-traditional pieces from them. Yes, their denim is amazing, but I was intensely coveting their smooth-as-butter leather jackets, all studded and glorious! The line boasts a lot of leather, patches, studs, grommets and plaid. Everything is very rock + roll – and I love it! Some of my faves were navy blue studded cords, a studded lapel leather jacket (pictured above) and a sleeveless studded + patched up leather jacket.

They also had a cream colored tuxedo style blazer with black lapels - which was pretty killer. The tees were also super soft and comfy, both for the men’s line and women’s line. If I was only able to buy clothes from one line for fall, it would have to be from William Rast.

I could have stayed in that showroom all day and, again, would have busted out the machete if offered the opportunity to work for them in PR or something, but I had more to explore.

NEW, EDGY DESIGNERS MAKE THEMSELVES KNOWN THROUGH “FOCUS”FOCUS was a part of the Market showcasing edgy, street friendly labels – think Urban Outfitters and Nylon Magazine mashed up into one indie designer casserole.

This showcase was held in the penthouse of the California Market Center and was, by far, my favorite part of the show. What is so great about designers like this is their enthusiasm for their label and their need to be known. True passion was shown at FOCUS because these designers are still all about their art and creativity, as opposed to some of the bigger labels who have gone corporate and lost their sense of identity.

Among my favorites at FOCUS were:
Dustie Doll Clothing (amazing tees re-done in a way you wouldn’t expect, lots of details, fringe and studs)
Micha Design (killer, crazy, insane, one-of-a-kind statement necklaces made from vintage pieces)
Etched Clothing (comfy, super soft, edgy, graphic tees for men and women)
Crow Thief (probably the coolest military inspired jacket I’ve ever seen)

OTHER HIGHLIGHTSDesigners that chose not to show at the FOCUS showroom were placed in the various contemporary sections of the California Market Center. I gravitated toward the labels that really showed me something special – those that actually tried to produce something of interest. Anything different, detailed, funky, studded or shiny really caught my eye.

As a consumer, I appreciate the fact that some designers faced the economy situation head-on, they didn’t cower and they weren’t afraid to show what they’ve really got. They brought out the big guns when times got tough. I think that is extremely important as it shows who is really in it for the right reasons.

If I’m in a bit of financial trouble, I don’t want to look at fashion (one of the things that make me feel better about whatever situation I might be in), and see only bland neutrals and boring pieces. Seeing that will only remind me of my situation – it most definitely will NOT uplift me. Inspire me! Take me to another world!

While the designers below smacked me in the forehead with their creativity and beauty, other designers were plainly afraid of taking risks – and that’s not going to work. Some of the ones who got it right are above. I stress the word “some.” These are the lines that impressed me so much that I managed to excitedly write them on my Moleskine, complete with about a million exclamation marks!

L.A. Market Sees Retailers Thawing Out for Spring Season

The 824 Building was a destination for trendy Los Angeles stores Kitson, Live! On Sunset and Planet Funk and the East Coast chain South Moon Under, which has store locations in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Clean basics at an affordable price were key for menswear buyers. “Price point continues to be the strongest category,” said Tim Padilla of the T&A Showroom. Basic tees in burnout treatments by Fluxus that wholesale for $18 to $28 and Gregory Quinn slouchy tees with a clean finish that wholesale from $22 to $45 were among the best sellers.

Focus returns with Thread Contemporary apparel and accessories show Focus returned to the California Market Center’s 13th-floor penthouse with an expanded lineup that included Thread Select, a sampling of labels put together by San Diego–based consumer trade show Thread.

Among the new exhibitors during the show’s Oct. 16–18 run was Amai Unmei, a 2-year-old contemporary collection based in Portland, Ore.Amai Unmei means “sweet destiny” in Japanese. Designer Allison Covington’s collection features flirty dresses and vintage-inspired coats, which are wholesale priced from $125 to $230. Sales representative Vanessa Urenda said the collection’s classic aesthetic has found a base in several boutiques on the West Coast—but not yet in Los Angeles.

Returning to Focus was San Diego–based Crow Thief, which is designed by Melissa Hendrix and Ray Lawson. Described by Hendrix as “urban-contemporary streetwear,” the men’s and women’s line includes printed tees, as well as a few tailored jackets, vests and dresses. Retail prices range from $44.00 to $190.00. “I’ve written orders, but it’s a bit quiet,” said Hendrix on the second day of the show.
